reading & writing

What did you read? Would you recommend it to others? What are you reading next?

Discuss your reading habits.

Do you carry a book with you or shy away from every chance to read?

Do you read before bedtime or when just waking up?

Do you read at meals, in the car, in the bathroom?

What did you write? Would you show it to others? What are you writing next?

Discuss your writing habits.

Do you carry a notebook and pen with you always, or always find yourself searching for either?

Do you write before bedtime or when just waking up?

Do you write at the table, text while driving, play words with friends while in the bathroom?

What's your next chapter?

I read "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen and I would definitely recommend it to others. I am not sure why everyone complains when they have to read this book in class, I wish I had had the opportunity to do so and have discussions with my classmates about it. Next, I plan on reading all of the People magazines I possibly can. Throughout the craziness of this year, I have yet to catch up on my celebrity gossip. I used to read for pure enjoyment and now it seems like a chore. I can't wait until I can just pick up a good book and not feel pressured to finish it. I wish there was some way to make reading in school less of a task and something kids wanted to do. I usually carry a book with me when I go places, but I am more likely to pick up a magazine because it's easier to finish and sometimes I feel as if I have to finish something to feel accomplished (back to reading books for school.) I read before bedtime because as Gillis knows, reading Pride and Prejudice in the morning puts me to sleep. I can't read in the car (carsick), don't read in the bathroom, sometimes at meals if I need to get reading done, but I usually read in my bed or on the couch. I like to be comfy when I read. Hopefully, one day I will read just because I want to sit down with a good book.

I read “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime” by Mark Haddon. It’s about an autistic boy, Christopher, who has stumbled upon his neighbor’s dog that has been murdered. He then sets out on a mission to find the killer, and he finds out some secrets along the way that shift his view of the world forever. I would recommend this book to anyone. It is a fast read, but it is easy to submerse yourself into the world of Christopher and the book is entertaining in an unintentional way.
I don’t necessarily carry a book with me everywhere I go. I do read when I go on long trips though, and I’ll most likely always have a book with me on a vacation. When I find a book that I am wrapped up in I always take any chance I have to read. I’ll read in bed, on the couch, or in the car. I enjoy reading outside on my back porch or in the hammock. Usually I read before bed on weeknights and on weekends I’ll wake up and read before and after breakfast and before I head to bed. It makes it a lot more enjoyable to read when you have a book you are truly interested in.
For my next literary adventure I’m not to sure what I’ll be reading. I’m hoping to find something as interesting as the book I just read. I was thinking maybe another tale by Kurt Vonnegut. He is always good for a fun read.

I am reading "On The Road" by Jack Kerouac. I don't feel like I could make a recommendation until I finish it, but it's kept my attention so far. It feels like an adult version of "The Catcher in The Rye." The narrator and his friend Dean are more mature than Holden, but, as the title suggests, still very unsettled both mentally and geographically.
Next, I am going to take another stab at "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel GarcĂa Marquez. It was my second choice for the missed classic assignment. I started to read it last year and for some reason just never finished it.
I don't really have any set reading habits to discuss. I always read the paper in the morning, but other than that I don't get much time to read for pleasure -- just homework assignments. When I do have something to read, though, I read before I go to bed or out on the deck in the summer.
I find that I can't read in the car; I'm too distracted by the scenery. I almost always read at meals, though. I think I inadvertently conditioned myself to feel like I need to read if I'm eating something (thankfully, it doesn't work the other way around). ...And thanks for asking, but I'm not a bathroom reader.

I chose to write (due to an unfortunate habit of leaving my book at home. It's awfully difficult to read without a book). I don't generally write in my free time, though I do enjoy it. Usually time constraints prevent me from writing, so it was a refreshing change to be able to write, even within the narrow and relatively stifling confines of specific and mundane writing prompts. I certainly prefer to read a book or a magazine and generally choose that over writing when I have a choice.
